The Somerset Trail is on the Mount Mee Plateau and part of the D’Aguilar Range. This is a circular route on graded track – 14km, elevation gain 432m. We are allowing 4.5-5 hours at a fairly comfortable pace.
Meet at The Gantry picnic ground at 8am. This lovely circuit passes through a variety of terrain – rainforest, piccabeen groves, dry sclerophyll forests, scribbly gum forests, with a few pockets of hoop pine plantation as well. Although the main wildflower season will have finished, there may still be some remaining flowers at this time. The track is a little uneven and rocky in parts and there are a number of hills with steady ups and downs, but nothing too steep or daunting.
Somerset Lookout at approximately the halfway point has superb views over Somerset Dam and the Brisbane Valley, and we will probably stop about 11:30am at Wivenhoe Lookout for late morn tea (early lunch if you prefer!). We should be back at the picnic ground approx 2pm for a late lunch (or early arvo tea, if you prefer!)
Bring at least 2L water, boots, hat, morn tea or lunch for the midway rest-stop, and the usual daywalk gear. Poles may be helpful if you generally use them, but are not strictly necessary.
Carpooling to be arranged closer to the time. Please indicate in comments below if you need a lift, or are willing to drive and take passengers.
