A shorter walk option for the Saturday of the O’Reillys camping weekend, this is an 11km circuit walk and should take us about 4 hours. The starting time of 9am will make it easier for day-walkers to arrive and join us, and we should be able to time a lunch stop for either Elabana Falls or Picnic Rock.
We’ll meet at the campground firepit / kitchen area and walk up through the OReillys carpark and past the shop/cafe to start by walking out on the Border Track. The Box Forest track branches off nearly 2km in, and descends gradually through stands of Brush Box and piccabeen palms down to the rainforest along Canungra Creek. We’ll follow the circuit clockwise, passing several beautiful waterfalls. Note that especially after rain, this track can be very muddy, and one or two creek crossings may be required. Be prepared to get wet feet if necessary, and pack your repellent in case of leeches.
Bring water, snacks, lunch, hiking boots, poles probably useful, and the usual daywalk gear.
Because this is a shorter walk with less time-pressure, we will be moving at a relaxed pace and having a few stops along the way for views, photos etc.
