Lower Portals Track (Mt Barney NP) – (SDW 3 C)

Approximately 8km on mostly dirt track from the Lower Portals Rd carpark to Barney Creek. Generally considered a moderately challenging track, especially if it’s a hot day, due to some fairly steep hills along the way, possibly on tracks that are fairly eroded in parts. In the final stretch to the waterhole, the track disappears and we will be rockhopping and clambouring over boulders for 50m or so. There is one creek crossing that is usually stepping stones over shallow water provided there hasn’t been much recent rain. (A lot of rain might make it a problem).

If you are coming from the Mt Barney basecamp, I’d suggest leaving camp at 7:30am, to be at the Lower Portals carpark by 8am. If anyone would like to join us just for the day, we can meet you at the carpark (please let me know in advance!). Note that part of this road is dirt, but is usually accessible by 2WD vehicles.

We will have morning tea at the Lower Portals and there is the opportunity for a swim in this lovely (but chilly!) water-hole if you wish. We will return along the same track and have lunch at the carpark. (Bring a chair or picnic rug to sit on – toilet facilities only)

Poles are not essential but will be helpful for creek crossing, rock hopping and eroded tracks. Also bring plenty of water, hat, morning tea, towel, togs or a change of clothes if you’d like a swim, lunch to have back at the cars, and the usual daywalk gear.
