Mount Maroon (North Summit) and Caves Loop DW M 6D

This is a spectacular, though very challenging route up Mt Maroon. The total distance is deceptively short at only about 6 km, yet the elevation gain is over 600 m, so the route is steep and mostly off-track or following a rough trail, though minimal bush bashing. No technical climbing is involved, though there is often the need to use hands and feet to scramble around and over large boulders or small rock outcrops.
We start at the same place as the most popular Cotswold Route, but soon veer off the main track heading uphill to a cliff-line and then contour west under the cliffs until we reach the large overhang caves after about an hour of travelling. The framed views from here are stunning. We then continue contouring west under the cliffs until we reach the long ridge that climbs steeply to the south until it emerges on the northern rim of the mountain plateau. From here we travel back east along the cliff top escarpment which we had travelled below before. The walking is much more forgiving, but still up until we reach the northern secondary summit at 900 m. From here we descend into the gully between the north and south peaks and return to the start point via the Cotswold track. A decision could be made in the gully to also climb the main summit if members had not done it before and if we feel we still have energy in reserve.
Bring all the necessary day walk items as per the Club’s checklist, including plenty of water and food (morning tea and lunch), sturdy footwear and hiking poles if you use them. Also, a change of clothes and shoes if you are carpooling in someone else’s vehicle.
For safety and comfort reasons, this is a fair weather event and changes may be made at the camp if necessary. Also, please regularly check the messages on the event Meetup site for any further information. If you are unsure of your capability for this event please feel free to contact the host and discuss the details further: Terry – 0407 915 301.
