Bally Mountain DW S 5 C

This walk is in the Gold Coast hinterland at the back of Mudgeeraba and is an excellent introduction to Scenic Rim mountain climbing with maximum return for relatively little effort. However, “relatively” is the operative word, as it is still a difficult and challenging class 5 walk with 439 m of ascent over a total distance of 6 km. You need to be fit and agile to do it. It involves minor rock scrambling to the peak where we will be rewarded with 360 degree panoramic views to Springbrook, Wollumbin Mt Warning and the Gold Coast. The descent is via a mostly broad razorback ridge that again is steep in places and involves a few rock scrambling sections, though with only minor exposure. More experienced club members can assist those who have little practice with this, though no technical climbing is involved.

We start at the trailhead parking lot at the end of Bonogin Road (see map) which starts just out of Mudgeeraba and takes you past The Hunted Cafe, where we can stop for a coffee and chat at the end of the climb. We should arrive back in the Redlands late-afternoon.

Bring all the necessary day walk items as per the Club’s checklist, including plenty of water and food (morning tea and lunch), sturdy footwear and hiking poles if you use them. Also, a change of clothes and shoes if you are carpooling in someone else’s vehicle.

Carpooling will be directly organised by the leader prior to the event, and our departure time from a designated location in the Redlands (to be confirmed) will be 6.30am.
