Brown Lake is a perched freshwater lake surrounded by melaleuca and tea-tree bushland, and is accessible from Dunwich on Stradbroke Island.
We will meet at the Stradbroke Flyer ferry terminal (NOT the Sealink terminal further along) at 7:30am for the 7:45am ferry departure. Tickets can be bought in the office there, or on-board the ferry ($22 return for adults, $11 concession). While not as bad as on a weekend, parking can be a challenge so plan to arrive with plenty of time.
The ferry arrives at One Mile Jetty, Dunwich approx 8:15am. We will walk through the cemetery and the back streets of Dunwich, cross Alfred Martin Way, and then tackle a short and very steep sandy track to the top of a hill behind the town. This will get the heart-rate up, but the views out to the bay are well worth the effort!
We’ll follow the sandy tracks over the other side of the hill and join the 4WD track that leads in to the picnic area by the lake (toilet facilities and picnic tables available). We will have morning tea here (anyone brave enough can have a swim!) and return the way we came back to Dunwich.
The total distance is only 10km, and the track into the lake is a gentle gradient (gradual downhill to the lake, gradual uphill return, short easy off-track section). The tracks through Dunwich are generally bitumen/paved paths/grass. However the section over the hill behind town is steep and the total elevation gain of this walk is approx 230m. This walk would be graded as easier if it wasn’t for the steep sandy hill!
We should be able to get back to the starting point by midday. Options from here are
– Lunch at the Little Ship Club next to One Mile Jetty (own expense). The kitchen at LSC closes at 2pm, and we can catch the 1:15pm ferry back (or 2:30 if any delays).
– Or, bring own picnic lunch and sit in cemetery/park
– Or, if you want to try for the 12:00 ferry, you may be able to cut off the last section of the walk around Dunwich foreshore.
Bring – Hat, water, morning tea, shoes suitable for walking on sandy tracks, insect repellent, cash/$ card for ferry (not a Go-card!) and for lunch if you wish to join us at LSC.
