Caves and Lower Bellbird tracks, Binna Burra – (DW M 3 C)

We will meet in the lower day-use area at Binna Burra at 8:30am and be ready to start walking at 9am. First we will walk the Caves Track (3.5km) down through rainforest and then open eucalypt forest, following the cliffline to Kweebani Cave, with great views down into the Coomera Valley.

We will have a morning tea stop at the Information Centre (toilets, picnic table), and then walk a short distance beside the main road, to the start of the Lower Bellbird Track on the opposite side of the road.

This next track is 8.5km, and we begin by following an old dirt road down to a clearing which was once a dairy farm, and we enter the rainforest again from there. The track passes through patches of regenerating forest (post fires and storms) and rainforest and heads towards Nixon Creek, where it joins the last part of the Shipstern track. We’ll stop for lunch at some point, and then have a steady uphill trudge for the last 4km or so, past cliff faces, Yangahla lookout and Koolanbilba lookout, and back up to the carpark.

We’ll allow 5 hours but may be a little less, and will be walking at a comfortable pace (not too fast!). Bring morning tea, lunch, insect repellent, raincoat, warm jumper, water and usual daywalk gear. Poles may be useful if you usually like to use them (uneven rainforest tracks, but no creek crossings etc).

The two tracks, 12km in total, are not technically challenging, but there are some long steady uphill sections (and a few steeper sections of steps, especially on the Caves side) and general fitness is recommended.
