Introductory Through Walk – Sunshine Coast Hinterland TW M 4C
This is a 2-day/1-night hike aimed at members who have not done through walking before and would like to give it a go to see what it is like, or perhaps you’ve done a little bit and would like to do more. We would also like to invite experienced members to come along to share their knowledge of, and love for, hiking. We have prebooked the camp sites
We will hike approx. 8km from Delicia Road, Mapleton to Thilba Thalba Walkers Camp. The track goes roughly up and along a ridge, through rainforest and eucalypt forest. We will have a rest at Gheerulla Valley Lookout from where we will have magnificent views. The track, and the camp, are part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk, but we will only do a short section.
Once we reach Thilba Thalba we will set up our tents and will have plenty of opportunity to talk about through walking, hiking equipment options, food, you name it. There is another lookout right next to the campground and it is a great spot to relax for happy hour at the end of the day. Thilba Thalba has a toilet and a rainwater tank. Water from the tank will need to be treated before drinking. This can be done with purification tablets, boiling, or filtration.
On the 2nd day, after breakfast, we’ll pack up camp and walk out the way we came, re-energised and keen to do more through walking hopefully.
For new walkers, we understand that you may not have the gear, so please let us know what equipment you need, and we’ll try to help you source it. For experienced members in the club, if you have any gear that you are willing to lend, or sell, please let us know. We hope that this hike can be an opportunity for inexperienced/new through walkers to have a taste of through walking before investing in all their hiking equipment. Whilst hiking is often about minimal weight, the idea of this walk is to get out walking, making do with what you’ve got and what you can maybe borrow.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. Whilst we are happy to try and help you source some gear, don’t expect us to do everything for you. See what you can organise yourself, perhaps borrow from friends or family, and we can try to help you out with the rest. Main equipment to start with are: tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, and a hiking pack to carry everything in. We do have a limited amount of equipment available to borrow on hand and it will not be necessary to have your own jetboil and water filter for this camp. we are happy for you to use ours
We are in the process of planning a 3-day, 45km hike in Gibraltar Range and Washpool National Parks for a bit later this season, which would be a great next step for anyone keen to do more through walking once they have done this introductory hike. Keep your eyes out for when it comes up on meetup and join the waitlist!
