Moreton Island Walk-in Basecamp at the Wrecks Campground
Tuesday 28 – Thursday 30 January 2025
This will be a very leisurely camp, enjoying beach camping on the bayside of beautiful Moreton Island. Suggested activities are snorkelling at the wrecks, swimming, and beach walking. The wrecks are a cluster of ships scuttled by the Queensland Government between 1963 and 1984 to provide safe anchorage spot for recreational boat owners. Coral is now starting to form in and around the wrecks, providing a haven for over 100 species of fish and sometimes even dolphins, wobbegongs and dugongs.
We’ll be taking the 8am ferry across as walk on passengers on Tuesday morning. The ferry takes about 90 minutes and arrives on the beach adjacent to the campground, so it is only a short walk to where we will set up camp. The campground has toilets and beach showers. It is recommended online to bring drinking water. We will return on Thursday 30 January on the 3pm ferry. Luggage allowance for walk-on passengers is limited to 3 pieces of carry-on luggage. We suggest taking your thru walking pack if you have one, but it’s not far to walk so a duffel bag would also work. Please note there is no ferry service to/from Moreton Island on Wednesday 29 January.
The Wrecks are a patrolled beach in the QLD school holidays only, so we expect there to be NO lifesavers this time (school holidays end 27 January). BYO snorkelling gear (fins, mask, snorkel; wetsuit optional). We strongly recommend bringing a floatation device of some sort (e.g. pool noodle, boogie board, life jacket) to use when snorkelling, as snorkelling at the wrecks involves swimming across a channel.
Snorkelling and swimming at the Wrecks is strictly at your own risk. Each member must decide their own capabilities before they go. We recommend swimming with others. The leaders are not responsible for your safety. This is a Base Camp only, there are no organised activities planned.

Street parking at Howard Smith Drive from where the boat departs is very limited. Paid parking is $20 per vehicle per day and spaces are limited. We suggest carpooling to the ferry, or organise to be dropped off, and picked up.
