This hike is part of the Mt Barney Basecamp options. It is the standard and most direct route up Mt Maroon with the reward at the summit of spectacular 360-degree views of the entire Barney Range and beyond. It is however a very challenging experience. The total distance is deceptively short at only 4.5 km return, yet the elevation gain is 660 m, so although following a distinct, rough track the route is steep and demanding. No technical climbing is involved, though there is often the need to use hands and feet to scramble around and over large rock slabs and outcrops.
We start near the end of Cotswold Road and climb steadily up a narrow ridge and then enter a gully with some spectacular cliffs off to the right. Here we must be wary of rock falls or dislodging rocks ourselves from the track. We emerge into a beautiful, small, wooded valley that leads us to the final open summit area where we navigate a series of straightforward rock slabs to the top.
Bring all the necessary day walk items as per the Club’s checklist, including plenty of water and food (morning tea and lunch), sturdy footwear and hiking poles if you use them. Also, a change of clothes and shoes if you are carpooling in someone else’s vehicle.
For safety and comfort reasons, this is a fair weather event and changes may be made at the camp if necessary. Also, please regularly check the messages on the event Meetup site for any further information. If you are unsure of your capability for this event, please feel free to contact the host and discuss the details further: Terry – 0407 915 301. Please note though that there is no mobile phone reception at the Mt Barney Lodge Campground, so there can be no contact from Friday onwards. Final arrangements will be confirmed at the camp.
