Tingalpa Creek Paddle – Dam Wall to Chadwell St (KAK)

October 20 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

One way, 9km paddle downstream on Tingalpa Creek for experienced kayakers, starting from Killarney Crescent Park in Capalaba (opposite 34 Killarney Crescent). We will first head a little upstream to have a look at the dam wall and spillway, which are quite an impressive sightfrom the water. We will then turn around and follow the meandering creek downstream on the outgoing tide through the more interesting sections of Tingalpa Creek. (Downstream from Chadwell St the creek starts getting wider and becomes a bit boring).
Today’s high tide is decent so we should have plenty of water in the creek, however there is always a chance of underwater obstructions, and we will have to navigate around a few mangroves here and there. but not many. We will end our paddle at the canoe ramp on Chadwell Street in Ransome.

The plan is to have a car parked at Chadwell Street, so that on arrival we can drive back to Capalaba, pick up the cars. We’ll aim for one person to stay behind while we do this if possible, so the boats won’t be unattended. Depending on the participants and cars we may have to do a 2nd trip but we’ll work that out on the day.

BYO kayak, paddle and PFD. Wearing your PFD is compulsory (club requirement). This event uses a waitlist. To join please put your name on the waitlist. If you haven’t paddled with me before please contact me 0421 272 216. I strongly recommend anyone who wants to paddle with me to please attend a rescue practice session. There is one coming up on November 5th.

Starting time of 9.30am is when we aim to be on the water in Capalaba. Please arrive early and allow enough time to unload your boat so we can indeed be on the water by 9.30am. The somewhat late start is dictated by the tide. The track down to the creek is pretty rough, so we will help each other to carry the boats down to the water and launch one at a time. The access track is located at the back of the park, to the left of the playground. It is not visible from the road but obvious once you walk into the park.

Wear suitable footwear. No bare feet (stonefish may be present in the creek). We’ll be on the water all morning, no stopping, so it might be a good idea to bring a snack to have along the way, as well as plenty of water as it could be hot. Maximum group size 5 for car shuffle purposes. I may require someone to come earlier as we’ll need to park a car at Chadwell Street for when we finish.
